Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and productive holiday season.
We’ve got big things in store for the Seal Beach Police Department this year, and we will share many of them with the community in the coming weeks and months.
However, before we get to that, as is our tradition, let’s look at just a few of the new laws that went into effect in California on Jan. 1, 2024.
• Bicycle Signals: Bicycles are required to obey bicycle signals whenever an official traffic control signal exhibiting different colored bicycle symbols is shown concurrently with official traffic control signals or pedestrian control signals exhibiting different colored lights or arrows.
• Speed Cameras: The cities of Long Beach, San Jose, Oakland, Glendale, Los Angeles and San Francisco will establish a Speed Safety System Pilot Program. Violations captured by speed cameras will be subject to civil penalties up to $25.
• Shared Mobility Devices: The definition of mobility devices is expanded to include electrically motorized boards, motorized scooters, electric bicycles, and non-electric bicycles.
• Concealed Carry Revision: Prevents concealed carry of firearms in some public spaces, including sidewalks and school zones.
• Fentanyl Distribution Penalty: Increased potential prison sentences for criminals convicted of dealing high amounts of fentanyl.
• Child Sex Trafficking: Child sex trafficking is classified as a serious felony. It includes harsher penalties on people convicted of such crimes.
• Ebony Alerts: Creates a new emergency alert called an Ebony Alert, used to help locate missing Black women and youth.
