Briefing Room: Summer safety tips from the Seal Beach Police

Hi Seal Beach,

Now that summer is in full swing, kids are out playing in the community, enjoying the freedom and sunshine. While this is a great time for exploration and fun, it’s also important for parents to ensure their children understand how to stay safe. Here are some essential tips to help your kids navigate their summer adventures safely:

Know Their Information

First, ensure your children know their full name, address, and phone number. They should also be aware of who to contact in case they need help. This basic information is crucial for ensuring they can get assistance quickly if needed.

Identify Safe Places

Discuss with your children a list of “safe places” they can seek help if they ever feel unsafe or find themselves in an emergency. These places can include:

• A police officer or station: Teach them to recognize police officers and understand that they are there to help.

• A fireman or station: Firefighters are also trusted figures who can provide safety and assistance.

• The library: Libraries are community hubs where staff are trained to assist in emergencies.

• Trusted neighbors or family members who live nearby: Identify specific people they can turn to if they need help.

Parents, please do not threaten children with the idea that police will arrest them for misbehaving, as this can create unnecessary fear and mistrust. Instead, it’s important to teach children that police officers are there to help and protect them, fostering a sense of safety and security.

Knowing When to Seek Help

It’s crucial to talk with your kids about situations in which they should seek help. These may include:

• If they are lost and can’t find their way home.

• If someone is following them or making them feel uncomfortable.

• If a stranger approaches them, asks them to go somewhere with them, or offers them something.

• If someone starts a fight with them or tries to bully them.

• Anytime they just feel unsafe or uncomfortable in a situation.

Set Clear Rules

Establishing clear rules for when your children are out in the community is essential for their safety. Here are some rules to consider:

• Tell you where they are going: Make sure they inform you of their plans and destinations.

• Know who they are traveling with: Ensure they are with trusted friends or family members.

• Check in with you: Have them call or text you when they get to their location and when they are heading back home.

Summertime Safety

Summertime is a great opportunity for children to learn about independence and responsibility while still staying safe. By equipping them with these essential safety tips and guidelines, you can ensure they have a fun and secure summer. Remember, communication is key—keeping an open dialogue with your kids about safety will help them feel confident and prepared for any situation they might encounter. Enjoy the sunny days ahead, knowing your kids are well-prepared to navigate their community safely!
