Briefing Room: SBPD advice on how to safely dispose of a firearm (or a replica)

Suppose a citizen wants to dispose of a firearm (or a replica of one) but doesn’t own a car? How do they take it to the police station for destruction without violating the law or causing officers to be concerned about their safety?

Thanks, Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for your excellent question.  Each year, the Seal Beach Police Department takes in several guns for destruction.  Under most circumstances, someone passes away, a family member finds a gun in the decedent’s belongings and does not want to keep it.  We’re happy to book the gun for destruction, as we do not want unsecured firearms getting into the wrong hands.

That being said, here are a few ways to help us and to make sure everyone is safe.

If you live in Seal Beach and wish to dispose of a firearm or replica, we offer two simple and safe options: we can come to you, or you can bring the item to the police station.

Steps for Safe Firearm Disposal

• Call the Police Department first.  Before taking any action, please contact the Seal Beach Police Department at (562) 594-7232. Let us know that you have a firearm or replica you wish to surrender for destruction and provide a brief description of the item. This allows us to coordinate the safest way to assist you.

•Secure the Firearm.

Whether we come to you or you bring the item to the station, it is essential to ensure that the firearm or replica is:

—Unloaded: Make sure the firearm is not loaded, even if it’s a non-lethal replica like a BB gun.

—Safely Stored: Place the firearm or replica in a secure container, such as a lockable case or sturdy bag, before the officer arrives or before you head to the station.

If we come to you

After contacting the police department, an officer will be dispatched to your location (other calls for service and emergencies permitting). Do not handle the firearm in the officer’s presence. Simply inform the officer of its location, and they will retrieve it safely.

If You Bring the Firearm to the Station

If you prefer to bring the firearm or replica to the police station and you have access to a vehicle, please leave the secured item in the trunk of your car when you arrive. An officer will meet you outside the station to retrieve the item directly from your vehicle. This ensures that the process is handled safely and without any concerns.

By following these steps, you can help ensure that the process is conducted smoothly and securely without any risk to yourself or others. The Seal Beach Police Department is here to assist you every step of the way, making it as easy and safe as possible to dispose of firearms or replicas.

If you have any further questions or would like to arrange the safe surrender of an item, please contact the Seal Beach Police Department at (562) 594-7232.
