Briefing Room: Safety tips for buying things online

Hello!

I was selling an item on Facebook Marketplace and arranged with my buyer to meet at Seal Beach. It’s an old computer part so it’s on the pricey side my question is if you guys have an exchange area to make sure I don’t get robbed or any possible crime that could occur. I was originally planning on meeting near the pier but wanted to ask just in case. If not, is there any relatively safe area to meet up with a person to exchange my old computer part?

Thank You!

Hi Seal Beach,

This is an excellent question!

In today’s digital age, buying and selling goods online has become incredibly convenient. Platforms like eBay, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and others have made it easy to reach a wide audience. However, with this convenience comes some risks. Whether you’re selling products online or meeting potential buyers in person, it’s crucial to take precautions to protect yourself. Below are some strategies to protect yourself:

1. Choose Reputable Platforms

Use well-known and trusted platforms that offer some level of protection for both buyers and sellers. These platforms often have security measures and customer support in place to help resolve disputes and protect users from fraudulent activity.

2. Be Cautious with Personal Information

Avoid sharing personal information such as your home address, phone number, or email address. Use the messaging system provided by the selling platform to communicate with potential buyers. If you must share your phone number, consider using a temporary or secondary number.

3. Set Up a Separate Email

Create a separate email account specifically for selling items online. This helps protect your primary email from spam and potential phishing attacks.

4. Screen Potential Buyers

Before agreeing to meet someone in person, take time to screen potential buyers. Look for red flags such as vague responses, reluctance to meet in public places, or requests for unusual payment methods.

5. Meet in Public Places

When meeting a buyer in person, choose a well-lit, busy public location such as a coffee shop, shopping center, or even a police station parking lot.

6. Bring a Friend

Never go alone to meet a buyer. Bringing a friend or family member can deter potential criminals and provide additional security.

7. Limit the Amount of Cash

Avoid carrying large sums of money. If the transaction involves a significant amount, consider using a secure payment method such as PayPal, Venmo, or a bank transfer. Cashier’s checks or money orders can also be used but verify their authenticity before completing the transaction.

8. Inspect the Payment

If the buyer insists on paying with a check or money order, be cautious. Counterfeit checks and money orders are common scams. Consider asking the buyer to accompany you to the bank to verify the payment’s legitimacy before handing over the goods.

9. Protect Yourself from Scams

Be wary of common scams, such as buyers offering to pay more than the asking price or those who request shipping of the item before payment is received. These are often red flags for fraudulent activity.

10. Document Everything

Keep a detailed record of your communications with the buyer, including emails, text messages, and any agreements made. This documentation can be crucial if a dispute arises.

11. Use Tracking and Insurance for Shipments

If you’re shipping an item, use a service that offers tracking and insurance. This ensures that you have proof of shipment and delivery, protecting you from claims that the item was not received.

12. Trust Your Instincts

Above all, trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t proceed with the transaction. Your safety and security are far more important than making a sale.
