Briefing Room: please report all crimes to the Seal Beach Police Department

Hi Seal Beach,

I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving holiday.  All of us at the Seal Beach Police Department are grateful for the opportunity to serve such a wonderful community and for your support throughout the years.

I feel like I have written about this several times and speak about it on a daily basis, but I cannot say this enough.  We need your help!

It’s not uncommon for individuals to hesitate before reporting what they perceive as minor crimes, low-level offenses, or suspicious circumstances to the police. I have heard that people feel as though they are burdening law enforcement with trivial matters. This could not be further from the truth, as every piece of information can play a crucial role in maintaining community safety and preventing more serious incidents.  We want to remind the community that it is imperative to report each and every crime or suspicious circumstance that occurs in town.  Why is this so important to us?

While major crimes undoubtedly demand immediate attention (and thankfully, these major incidents occur rarely in Seal Beach), neglecting seemingly minor incidents can create a breeding ground for more significant problems.  If you report minor crimes or suspicious circumstances, it does several things which help us keep the community safe.

1. Early Intervention and Prevention:

Minor offenses and suspicious activities can be early indicators of more significant criminal trends. Reporting these incidents allows us to intervene quickly, preventing the escalation of criminal behavior. What might appear insignificant at first could be a crucial piece of the puzzle that helps authorities identify and address potential threats.

2. Gathering Intelligence:

Law enforcement relies on the community as a valuable source of intelligence. Reports about seemingly minor incidents contribute to the overall understanding of local crime patterns and trends. This information helps the SBPD allocate resources effectively, target problem areas, and develop proactive strategies to combat criminal activity.

3. Deterrence:

Knowing that a community is vigilant and willing to report any suspicious activity can act as a deterrent to criminals. Criminals are less likely to operate in areas where residents are actively engaged in promoting a safe environment. Reporting even minor incidents sends a clear message that the community is united against crime.

4. Community Partnership:

Effective policing is a collaborative effort between law enforcement and the community. By reporting minor crimes and suspicious activity, residents actively participate in creating a safer environment for everyone. This partnership fosters trust and communication between the police and the community, leading to more effective crime prevention and resolution.

5. Legal Consequences:

What may seem insignificant to one person might be a crucial piece of information needed to solve a crime. By reporting minor incidents, individuals contribute to building a comprehensive case against potential offenders, helping prosecutors seek justice and hold wrongdoers accountable for their actions.

Seal Beach, please report ALL crimes and suspicious circumstances to us.  If it is a life-or-death emergency, dial 9-1-1.  Otherwise, our non-emergency number is (562) 594-7232.  That number goes straight to Dispatchers.  If you are ever unsure, please err on the side of caution and just call us.

Thank you for being good partners and for helping us keep Seal Beach a safe and pleasant town.
