Briefing Room: A look at city of Seal Beach fishing laws

For example: No overhead casting on the pier

Hi Seal Beach,

Tuesday, June 18th was recognized as National Go Fishing Day, and while I don’t know the origin of this exciting day, we thought we might share some of the local laws in Seal Beach pertaining to fishing.

Seal Beach Municipal Code § 9.05.065 states:

A.  Each person fishing from the city beach or city pier shall have due regard for the safety of persons on the beach or in the water.

B.  No person fishing from the city pier shall cast the line overhead or across the deck of the pier.

C.  No person shall use or possess more than 2 fishing poles on the city pier for the purpose of fishing from the pier.

D.  No person shall use or possess a bow and arrow, crossbow and arrow or similar device for the purpose of fishing from the city beach, city pier or other city property.

In California, anyone aged 16 or older must obtain a sport fishing license to catch fish, mollusks, crustaceans, invertebrates, amphibians, or reptiles in both inland and ocean waters, except when fishing from a public pier.  For more information, please visit: https://www.ca.wildlifelicense.com/internetsales.  If you are going to eat the fish you’ve caught, check here to make sure the fish are safe to consume: https://oehha.ca.gov/fish/advisories.

And while we’re on the topic, remember that you cannot smoke or use electronic cigarettes on the pier, beach, or any city park.

You also cannot jump off the pier, deface the pier, or remove mussels from the pier pilings.  And always, listen to and heed the warnings of our marine safety lifeguards.

They work very hard to keep everyone who enjoys our beaches and pier safe.

We hope you catch the big one! Happy fishing!
