Behind the scenes of Run Seal Beach

Run Seal Beach is quickly approaching and the  time to register is now.

With more than 4,300 already registered and 300 kids for the 1K Fun Run, both will likely cap out.  Race Director Marc Loopesko said, “We are thrilled with the community response.  This year we have a strong platform of sponsors, good registration numbers and a team of volunteers second to none.  We are expecting the best run for our town for our Ruby Anniversary.”

Though the directors, Marc Loopesko, Elizabeth Kane and Seth Eaker are the board, it is in many ways, the organizing committee which makes it all work so very smoothly.

Returning to run the Kids Fun Run & Zone are Michelle Samuelson and Sue Dvonch.  Working with Lauren Warfield, who has been part of the Run since she did the Kids Fun Run, they produce not only the most amazing little run with a big heart, they also keep all the children entertained and safe.

Working closely with Marc is Greg Philips and Tim Kelsey.  Greg works on the course set up and break down while Tim really manages the Start line area.  Also working tirelessly at the Finish Line is Jo Dawson, who works to announce the top finishers in each age group.  Often the Run is asked if there is a finisher medal – there is not, but there will be a special commemorative item for the Ruby Anniversary this year.  Also, the Miss Seal Beach & Miss Teen Seal Beach court will be there to assist with the awards ceremony.

Coordinating from the police department is Sergeant Phil Gonshak, who has been a part of the Race for the last five years.  Though a long day for him and his family, he diligently gives back to his town with his lovely wife Stephanie and their three children.  He said, “though I am employee of the City, I am more happy to be a resident and proud to say a member of Run Seal Beach organizing committee.”

Nearby, past president of the Chamber, Deb Machen works with Gina Philips to produce and manage the Vendor / Sponsor Village and t-shirt sales.  Look for many of our sponsors and vendors in Eisenhower Park.  Anytime Fitness will be executing the official warm up for the race and thanks to the generosity of Dendreon, Energy Tubulars, Scan Health Plan and our other sponsors – much of the race prior to the event is fully funded.  As 100 percent volunteer produced, supported and executed, the Run would not be successful if not for the City of Seal Beach and especially the volunteers who all come out from the Lions Club and the Los Alamitos Unified School District – from booster clubs to students, teachers and parents.

This year, we will also have Pastor Don Shoemaker and John Heideman singing the National Anthem prior to the start of the race.  Look for key remarks from Mayor Ellery Deaton and McGaugh Principal Dr. Jerry Gargus.  Look in next week’s update for more details including street closures and neighborhood advisories.

In addition, there are special discounts for our military families and active duty.  Be sure to reach out to the Run for those rates. See you at the start line this year on April 5 at 8 a.m.  If you haven’t, be sure to secure your runner’s bib for April 5, at www.RunSealBeach.com and keep an eye out for more information.
