The California Coastal Commission is considering a request to approve a commercial development at the corner of Seal Beach’s iconic Main Street.
For many years now, the lot next to Seal Beach’s Bay Theatre has stood empty. A gas station once occupied the spot, but was bulldozed.
Now the property owner plans to put up a commercial building.
According to Jim Basham, Seal Beach’s director of Community Development, the property owner submitted a concept plan for a two-story building with a retail space on the first floor and office use on the second floor. Basham said the owners were working on the concept with the California Coastal Commission. A Jan. 11 Coastal Commission notice on the fence surrounding the lot says a Coastal Development permit is pending. The applicant is known as Main and PCH LLC (limited liability company). The permit notice said the company plans to build a 14,996-square-foot commercial building on the lot.
At least one owner of the property has been identified: Bob Griffith of Griffith Enterprises. Ed Selich said he was managing the project for Griffith.
“The application was submitted to the Coastal Commission earlier this month. Approval should be forthcoming this spring. Construction should then be starting in the fall with completion early 2014,” Selich said.
He said there was a lot of interest from potential tenants, but no commitments until the project is approved.
