All was quiet on the beach last week, according to Seal Beach Marine Safety (Lifeguard) Chief Joe Bailey.
According to Bailey’s weekly staff report to the city manager, Lifeguards performed five rescues, two boat rescues, answered 11 medial aid calls (none classified as major) and treated nine stingray injuries from Sept. 7 to Sept. 13.
(If that doesn’t sound like light week, compare it to the Labor Day weekend, when Lifeguards performed 130 water rescues during the three-day weekend.)
“With the kids back in school things have slowed down at the beach during the week,” Bailey wrote. “Over the weekend we have seen large crowds for this time of year. The unseasonable warm weather is drawing people to the beach to cool off. We are expecting temperature in the low 90s this coming weekend and are staffing up most of the towers on the beach. “
“We ended the summer with a nice south swell hitting our shores. We are still seeing waves in the 1-3 foot range and this may be the last south swell of the season,” Bailey wrote. “The weather pattern for this winter is shaping up to be an El Nino year. The outlook can still change in the weeks and months ahead, however at this point it looks like a high surf winter is shaping up.”
