A home invasion defendant fails to appear for sentencing, but is arrested days later

A man was scheduled to be sentenced last week for his role in a 2017 home invasion robbery. But Arron Michael Lipsey did not appear for his scheduled Friday, Oct. 4, hearing to be sentenced and to relinquish any firearms he owned, according to Kimberly Edds, public information officer for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Edds confirmed Lipsey’s failure to appear on Oct. 4 and subsequent arrest on Oct. 7 during a telephone interview this Tuesday. Both Lipsey and co-defendant Richard Derderian entered guilty pleas on Aug. 30, 2019, to felony charges stemming from the home invasion robbery on Seal Way that occurred in August 2017. They were arrested by the Seal Beach Police Department on Aug. 30, 2017, according to an SBPD press release. Both men were Costa Mesa residents when they were arrested. The jury trial had been scheduled to start on Sept. 20, 2019.

According to Edds, the judge issued a warrant for Lipsey’s arrest when he failed to appear last week. He was arrested on Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, by the Costa Mesa Police Department.

Seal Beach Police Sgt. Michael Henderson confirmed that Lipsey was in custody in an email on Oct. 8, 2019.

According to Edds, the date of Lipsey’s next court appearance is not yet known.

Derderian was sentenced to five years in state prison, according to Edds, who consulted with the prosecution before updating the Sun.

Derderian was sentenced on Aug. 30. As previously reported, Derderian pleaded guilty to 13 felony charges arising out of the crime, including first degree robbery, first degree burglary, using force to dissuade a witness, and making criminal threats, etc. Lipsey, who has yet to learn his sentence, pleaded guilty to 12 felony charges, including first degree robbery, first degree burglary, using force to dissuade a witness, making criminal threats, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, and possession of a firearm by a  prohibited person, and committing a felony while released from custody.
