Seal Beach Surfhing Championships set for weekend

The annual Seal Beach surfing contest will be held this weekend, according to a statement issued Thursday, Feb. 28, by Seal Beach Marine Safety (Lifeguard) Chief Joe Bailey.

The Kaitin Seal Beach Surfing Champtionship will be hosted by the Seal Beach Lifeguard Association.

“The contest starts at 8 a.m/ both Saturday and Sunday,” Bailey wrote in his Feb. 28 Marine Safety report to the city manager.  “The SBLA is expecting to have around 120 people enter the contests.  The contestants range in ages from 8 to 80 years old.  There are nine division titles up for grabs.  The SBLA has been hosting this community event for over 20 years.”

The event was originally scheduled in January, but was postponed.

“The contest is held during a waiting period when the surf is good,” Baily wrote at the time.   “On Monday (Jan. 14) the contest directors called the contest ‘on’ for this weekend and watched as the surf forecast deteriorated.  In an effort to create a fun community event with good surf the contest will be held at a later date.”
