The Los Alamitos Unified School District Council PTA honored three people last week at its annual Honorary Service Awards ceremony.
Los Alamitos High Music and Choir Director David Moellenkamp was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award. LAUSD Board Member Patricia Meyer was named the Outstanding Administrator for the year and LAUSD Board Member Meg Cutuli was presented with the Golden Oak Award for her service to the district and the community.
Fellow board member David Boyer introduced Cutuli during the ceremony and spoke of her commitment during four terms on the LAUSD Board of Education.
“So much has happened over the last 13 years in our district I cannot list all of the accomplishments that Meg has been part of, but it has been her strong leadership in making tough decisions that has allowed our school district and our children to prosper,” Boyer said.
Moellenkamp has built the Los Alamitos High Choir groups into some of the best in the nation, as they have won national competitions in recent years. Moellenkamp was introduced by LAHS Principal Joshua Arnold during the ceremony. Arnold spoke of Moellenkamp’s dedication and ability to both soak up and distribute knowledge. But it is a creative nature and playful attitude that has set him apart, Arnold said.
“He makes his students want to play, too. His zest for learning and for life and for music invigorates everyone who encounters it, and imbues them with the same fearless creative energy,” Arnold said.
LAUSD Deputy Superintendent Meyer was named the Outstanding Administrator mainly for her leadership in keeping the district on track during the recession and in spite of several severe budget cuts.
“Patti’s expertise in school district funding, budgeting and overall financial wisdom has helped the district weather the storms of the California financial crisis and has helped set us up for continued success in the future,” Superintendent Sherry Kropp said in her introduction of Meyer.
Meyer also oversees several key aspects within the district, including business, technology, maintenance, operations, facilities and transportation. She also helps with the Citizens’ Oversight Committee and the Operations Steering Committee.
