Los Alamitos High School’s Dive Team’s most winning diver, Sydney Czaus was forced to withdraw from the last regular season meet Thursday, April 14.
Czaus has nursed a wrist injury for months.
The pain flared up following her trip to the U.S. Diving Junior West Championships in Lubbock, Texas. X-rays show her ulna is twisting and in danger of fracturing.
She put in a valiant effort to dive despite the pain, wanting to complete the regular high school competition schedule. But by the sixth dive, the pain had gotten too bad and she withdrew to avoid making her injury worse.
With better weather than the previous week, the remaining divers put in a solid effort. Los Al Junior, Adam Payne won first place in the Varsity boys’ competition with 447.95 points.
He earned his first 10 of the season on his inward dive in pike position.
Fountain Valley’s Stephan earned second with his season’s best score. Edison High’s Joey Grisby finished third.
Newport Harbor’s Clay Pinckney missed the Week 5 Meet because his school is already on Spring Break.
In the Varsity girls, Fountain Valley Junior, Erica Curry took first place for the second time this year with 335.45 points.
Edison divers took the rest of the medals with Kaylie Higa in second and Niki Dunman finishing 3rd.
Sunset League has a two week break before League Finals because the different schools have different spring break schedules.
