Seal Beach gets grant for Leisure World

Seal Beach will get $180,000 in grant money to improve bathrooms in Leisure World homes. The City Council on Monday night, Aug. 12, amended its contract with Orange County to receive Community Development Block Grant money.

According to the staff report by Jim Basham, director of Community Development, Seal Beach is getting $180,000 for the second year in a row.

“The city is moving into the second year of the three year program with the county administering funds to upgrade bathrooms in Leisure World residential units,” Basham’s report said.

“The program is designed to improve accessibility to showers for seniors within their residential unit because of mobility problems, pain of movement, loss of balance or other disabilities diagnosed by a physician,” the report said.

“Where necessary, the scope of work will improve accessibility to the tub by converting the existing tub/shower into an accessible shower for seniors,” the report said.

“Additionally, funds can be used to install ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant grab bars and high-boy toilets,” the report said.

Basham’s report put the cost of improvements at $2,570 per bathroom.
