Saddened by Salon Meritage widow foreclosure

As a classmate of both David and Paula Caouette, I was shocked and saddened, like most, to learn of this additional burden (“Foreclosure fundraiser update,” blog.sunnews.org.) It’s inspiring to see the progress on this fundraiser, and my hope is that it will continue to grow, and that Paula be able to remain in her home, having a place to rest her weary head and heart each night. Much love.

St. Isidore will stay forever

Los Alamitos must be the luckiest town in Orange County. History was made on Jan. 13, 2014 when a contractual agreement was confirmed by the Diocese of Orange County and St. Isidore Historical Plaza. We will enter escrow this week and close on the Plaza by the end of February. This occurred last evening at a meeting held at St. Isidore’s.

The room erupted in cheers with not a dry eye in the house.

All of St. Isidore’s members and those members who claimed a brick be set in front of the Chapel are now assured that this place will be in our midst forever. Comité del Amor (St. Isidore Historical Plaza) wishes to thank all of those who have helped and supported the Plaza in its effort to Purchase, Preserve and Protect this beautiful historical site.

We have “Purchased” and “Protected.” Now the real work begins; it’s time to “Preserve.” St. Isidore will still need your continued support. The chapel needs to be renovated and there is a five-year mortgage. Los Alamitos is very fortunate in retaining its old0est building, a building commiserate with the famous California Mission style of buildings making it all truly historic. Los Alamitos is doubly blessed because it also has in its midst the Rancho Los Alamitos, a most beautiful Rancho.  Two historical places with one leading to the other. Truly a time to rejoice.

Government and the law

In George Orwell’s acclaimed (and prescient) novel “Animal Farm” comes the phrase “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

This quip came to mind, as I read Cathy Goldberg’s response to Bill Thomas’ letter from the week before.

While Ms Goldberg is accurate in her correction of Mr Thomas regarding Congressional pay, upon retirement (that they do not get full-pay, following a single term), to assert that “members of Congress are NOT exempt from the laws of the U.S.” is only true, in part.

While Congresspersons and Senators must comply with the laws of the land, it is helpful to remember that they make the laws (or they used to anyway, as it now appears that the Executive branch has lawmaking authority).

Regarding the “grassroots campaign” to advance a 28th Amendment (making laws apply equally to lawmakers as citizens), as well as Wisconsin Republican Ron Johnson’s Lawsuit against the Obama Administration for their Executive (and Unconstitutional) overreach, which subsidizes Congressional lawmakers and their staffers, from the obligated ObamaCare mandate, “the people” are rightfully up in arms.

The original ACA Legislation included the Grassley Amendment, which stated plainly, that; “the government could not offer members of the House and Senate and their staffs any insurance plans but those created by the bill or those set up in association with it.”

With the wave of his hand, Obama rewrote this provision of the law (something that he doesn’t have the Constitutional authority to do), and in effect “exempted” Congress and their staffs from the law.

Call it an exemption. Call it a carve-out. Call it cronyism. Call it a back-room deal. Call it whatever you want, but don’t call it “equal treatment under the law.”

As to snopes.com, which Ms Goldberg lauds as “excellent and highly regarded” – this is highly debatable. Snopes.com , as FactCheck.org are Far-Left (alleged) “Fact Checkers”, operated by the Annenburg Foundation. The Annenburg Foundation, with the help of unrepentant terrorist Bill Ayers (of Weather Underground fame) formed the Chicago based Annenburg Challenge, a philanthropic organization, of which Barack Obama was the founding Chairman of the Board.

Snopes.com is sometimes right, but almost always Left.

Snopes.com, and Factcheck.org both asserted as TRUE, Obamas’ oft-repeated claim “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. If you like your health plan, you can keep your health plan.”

Today, 5 million citizens have lost their health plans, and doctors, due to ObamaCare.

It is estimated that up to 80 million could lose their plans, once the “Employer Mandate” kicks in (note: according to the “law”, this provision was supposed to have gone into effect the 1st of January, but was “Unconstitutionally” delayed til past the 2014 elections, to serve a political agenda).

As Americans begin to feel the wrath of ObamaCare, as well as other regulatory and bureaucratic impositions, and government overreach, I hope (neigh, I pray) that they always keep in mind, that “some animals are indeed more equal than others.”

Our Founders wisely set limits on “what government could do on our behalf”, as they rightly feared the ensuing abuse, by those who would wield this power to advance their own (personal/political) aims. Today, we see their fears playing out in the tyranny of Barack Obama, his congressional minions, and a sycophantic Media Industrial Complex. We (the people) must decide, if this regime is still abiding by the oath they took, to “protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” If laws are good for me, but not for thee, then one must wonder.

New animal clinic coming

Friends of Long Beach Animals in partnership with the Long Beach Animal Care Services Department have received approval from the Long Beach City Council for the planning, labor, materials, and equipment for the installation of a new CAVCO Industries, Inc., manufactured commercial building for use as a dual-purpose veterinary clinic at the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village. Site preparation and installation of the building will begin in March with the facility operational in April.

The 800 square foot, fully equipped veterinary facility will be used to serve as the primary location for providing veterinary care for animals in the custody of Long Beach Animal Care Services for the five days of the week that Long Beach Animal Care Services is open. For the balance of the week, Friends of Long Beach Animals will operate a low cost spay-neuter clinic to serve low-income residents in the Long Beach area.  Friends of Long Beach Animal Shelter is a non-profit organization committed to saving animals’ lives through spay/neuter and education programs.

They are dedicated to responsible pet ownership, education and humane treatment of all animals. Long Beach Animal Care Services is dedicated to make Long Beach the safest large city for people and animals through a proactive strategy of community engagement and enforcement activities.  By offering better health care and related services to shelter animals, the positive outcome rate for shelter animals will increase. Along with low cost-free spay-neuter services, the quality of life for companion animals in the Long Beach area will be greatly enhanced. This project is an excellent example of a charitable organization working in conjunction with a city government organization to achieve mutual goals.

Rush Park playground   opening ceremony

Thank you to the Rossmoor Service District Directors and Staff for a very nice ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 18, for the opening of the rebuilt Rush Park playground.  There were some nice speeches by the directors and we viewed the new playground equipment including one with “Sailing Ship” motif.  The Staff provided excellent coffee, snacks and cold drinks, and delicious popcorn.  I was surprised that more residents were not in attendance.

Regarding atheist group

In reference to Theresa Sherrin’s letter published Jan. 22, 2014. I was a bit surprised by her article criticizing the National Atheist Group for insisting on their constitutional rights of trying to maintain a separation of church and state. It smacked of exclusionism.

I would like to remind her and other people in our community, that the News Enterprise lands on every citizen’s front porch in Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Cypress, La Palma, and others.

This includes Christians, Catholics, Baptists, Muslims, and a long list of practiced religions and beliefs, including Atheists.

It would be nice to think that we all co-exist as neighbors and, if any of our communal family members have a grievance, they can discuss it without being picked on or ridiculed by the majority. I’m sure Ms. Sherrin felt comfortable picking on one of the smallest niches in our community but I would like to let her know that we too are the doctors, lawyers, utility workers, etc., of Orange County that make our community as special as it is to all of us.
