Non-profit group launches effort to buy Bay Theatre

The Bay Theater Foundation kicked off its official launch as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on Friday, Dec. 5.

The Foundation is dedicated to buying, restoring, and revitalizing the Bay Theatre.

One of Seal Beach’s most iconic buildings, the Bay Theatre, has been vacant for almost two years.  Though for sale signs recently went up on the building, the old-style movie house has been for sale for some time.

Many members of the Seal Beach community and beyond would like to see the building restored and re-purposed to not only include a movie screen, but also be part of a larger cultural and historic resource.

In order to achieve its goal of buying the theatre, the non-profit needs about $2 million to buy the property.

The Foundation is on its way toward that goal with more than $100,000 in donations and pledges already recorded. Approval for the Foundation’s non-profit status came from the IRS in September.
