The Seal Beach Police Department issued a tsunami advisory last night. Coastal beaches and piers were closed staring at 4 a.m. today. At 6:18 a.m., the Police Department issued an announcement that the beach and piers were reopen. However, police tape still closed off the pier at 6:20 a.m.
Information was relayed to the Police Department’s Emergency Services Office about an 8.3 earthquake that occurred Wednesday evening, Sept. 17, in Chile. Because of this, the Seal Beach Police sent out the advisory as a precautionary measure.
Throughout the evening/morning hours, no property destruction or large changes in sea levels were reported along the coastline cities. Strong currents will continue throughout the day, so authorities advise the public be careful if they enter the water. As of 6 a.m. today, all beaches in the City of Seal Beach and the pier have been reopened.
Starting today, Thursday, Sept. 17, at 4 a.m., all beaches and piers (including Seal Beach’s) were closed along the Pacific Coast line starting at the northern border of San Diego to the southern border of San Luis Obispo. Within a few hours after this closure, the beaches and pier will reopen for normal usage. The largest wave of less than 1 foot was expected to arrive in Newport Beach this morning at 4:46 a.m.
