Seal Beach Environmental Quality Control Board reorganizes

District Four’s Catherine Showalter is new chair

Catherine Showalter is the new chair of the Seal Beach Environmental Quality Control Board.

District Four Board Member Showalter nominated herself. District Three Board Member Susan M. Perrell also nominated Showalter to be the new chair.

No other board members were nominated.

The vote was 4-0. District One board Member James Villanueva was absent.

District Five Board Member Donald Horning nominated Perrell for vice chair.

No other board members were nominated. The vote was 4-0.

In other news, the Board established a new meeting time. The board voted 4-0 to hold meetings at 5 p.m.

District Two Board Member Nick Massetti asked if the board could meet earlier, such as 5 p.m.

“Is the time fixed?” he asked.

Showalter said she didn’t have a problem with that, but didn’t know if city staff or the others have a problem.

Community Development Director Alexa Smittle said she didn’t think that would be a problem for staff.  “If that’s the recommendation of the board, we can certainly take that to the City Council for their review and approval if that’s your preference,” Smittle said.

Horning said during the summer when there is music near the pier, that becomes a parking problem. “Other than that, I don’t have a preference,” he said.

“And it’s already been decided that the third Wednesday of the month will be the meeting date, is that true?” Showalter asked.

“That’s staff’s recommendation, yes,” Smittle said. The board voted 4-0 to keep the meeting to the third Wednesday of the month. The meeting time will now go to a future council meeting for approval. There is only one council meeting scheduled in August.
