Dr. Stefan Bean of Garden Grove has become Orange Counties Superintendent of Public Schools. The paraplegic (from polio) now oversees more than 450,000 students all across Orange County, including schools in Seal Beach, Los Alamitos Huntington Beach, and other OC cities.
Focused on parental rights and choice, Bean said, “Parents have the right to know what their children are being taught. When decisions are made closer to those they affect, parents and school leaders can better align.”
According to Bean, the school system can be improved by teaching children classical education which is an approach that helps them think critically, to form arguments, debate, and be active citizens.
Serving California’s students as a teacher, principal, education consultant and superintendent, Bean’s challenges growing up as an English language learner and student with a disability taught him that it’s possible to unleash the potential in every student through an inclusive and rigorous education, rooted in the empathy for all scholars.
With a Master’s in education leadership from Loyola Marymount University and Doctorate in Leadership at CSUF, Bean has worked more than 24 years in education as a teacher, principal and superintendent.
