The Famous Pea Soup Andersen’s has left Buellton after 99 years in business at the location.
This place helped put Buellton on the map for California motorists and closed in December 2023, as new owners prepare to begin their stewardship over this piece of California history.
Buellton City Manager Scott Wolfe said:
“Andersen’s Pea Soup has been an iconic landmark known by travelers for almost 100 years. The news of its closure has elicited responses from across the nation, with many citing memories of enjoying meals there with family. The future of the site is unknown at this point, but the City will work to ensure that whatever follows in its place will acknowledge the significance of Andersen’s in the history of Buellton, and will serve in both design and function as a fitting gateway to Buellton and the Avenue of Flags. The hotel next door to it is open. It is under separate ownership, and not directly affected by the closure of the Restaurant.”
Huntington Beach Mayor Pro Tem Pat Burns said: “I made many trips that way on the 101 Freeway and stopped there many times. I haven’t been there in years but I’ll always have fond memories of Pea Soup Andersen’s in Buellton.”
Refuge Calvary Chapel Huntington Beach Discipleship Leader Michael Rogers said:
“Andersen’s was a perfect turn off to get something to eat and stretch your legs. The Restaurant had the famous Pea Soup of course but also a delicious full menu with one of my favorites corned beef sandwich (Reuben). My family enjoyed spending a considerable amount of time in the large souvenirs shop. They had toys, unusual gifts and all kinds of sweets and jams and fresh baked goods that were irresistible. The bakery was amazing. Through the years you could see the downsizing of the bakery and gift shop area. The Restaurant remained consistent with the foods and delicious iconic soup.”
Medford Oregon Resident Frank Pangborn said: “I began stopping at Pea Soup Andersen’s for their delicious Pea Soup and sampling their cheeses when I first attended San Jose State University as a Freshman. I drove from my home in Buena Park, California to San Jose starting in that first year at San Jose.”
You can purchase cans of their famous soups at Your Local Albertson’s/Vons/Pavillions Grocery stores.
