The Los Alamitos Girls Varsity Basketball team played in its second tournament championship game in two weeks and earned another second-place trophy in a 41-53 loss to highly ranked South Pasadena High (8-0).
In the December 2nd championship game at the Valley Christian Basketball Tournament, the Griffins (7-4) were led by last season’s Surf League co-MVP Kayli Liew who scored 14 points, including 2 threes, to go along with 3 steals and 1 assist. Liew has recently returned to action after missing four games due to a leg injury.
Senior Kassidy Beach, last season’s First Team All-League center, grabbed a whopping 17 rebounds and scored 8 points. Junior forward Bryn Pagett added 11 rebounds.
MaxPreps ranks South Pasadena 17th in the entire state and 3rd in Southern Section Division 2AA.
In the Griffins’ 58-45 semi-final victory over Yorba Linda High (5-5), Beach led the way with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals, and 2 assists while Pagett dominated the glass with 18 rebounds and 8 points.
In a well-balanced attack, 9 Griffins scored in the victory, including 8 points by sophomore guard Tam Yoshida, and 6 points each by Liew, senior guard Megan Lee, and sophomore guard Maya Asumbrado.
Earlier in the tournament, the Griffins scored a narrow 48-43 victory over Rolling Hills Prep (2-2) and were led in scoring by Yoshida with 14 points and Asumbrado with 11 points. Pagett grabbed 14 rebounds and freshman Denvur Ramirez added 8 rebounds.
A week earlier, the Griffins had also won a second-place trophy at the El Toro Thanksgiving Classic tournament.
The Griffins are currently playing in the Segerstrom Varsity Basketball Tournament through Dec. 16.
