One color that shines brightly throughout one of Asia’s poorest countries is the glittering gold of thousands of pagodas and temples. Needless to say, Myanmar is one of the most devout Buddhist countries in the world. “Golden Myanmar” will be presented by Donn Maryott at the next Seal Beach International Friendship Association’s dinner meeting on Thursday, March 17. Donn recently traveled to mysterious Burma, now known as Myanmar, to explore the wonders of this incredible land. From Rangoon and the Shwedagan Pagoda to the Irrawaddy River, he will share with us his observations, memories and video.
Explore Mandalay and a hot air balloon ride over the landscape of the Bagan Archaeological zone. Visit the Kalaywa Monastery, home to over 1000 Buddhist monks and nuns. See artists create golden statues for temples worldwide. Don’t miss this fascinating adventure by Maryott, an entertaining speaker and retired professor and park ranger. Member Kathy Cunningham will also be displaying her recent collection from her trip to Myanmar.
SBIFA will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day as well with a corned beef and cabbage dinner, followed by a brief meeting, the presentation and Opportunity Drawing. The latter is SBIFA’s only fundraiser which is used for local high school scholarships. The public is invited to this video presentation at the Mary Wilson Library Senior Center, 707 Electric Ave., Seal Beach.
Cost for the catered dinner meeting at 6:30 pm for members is $12 each or $22 for couples; non-members $15 or $27 for couples; $10 for students up to age 21. Program only is at 7:15 pm – $6.
