Representatives of neighboring community oppose plan to list Seal Beach shopping center as potential site for affordable housing. City cannot force property owner to build any housing
The Rossmoor Community Services District website is encouraging Rossmoor residents to attend the Monday, April 9, Seal Beach City Council hearing on Seal Beach’s Housing Element. The hearing will also look at seven potential sites for “affordable housing” in Seal Beach, including the Shops at Rossmoor (in Seal Beach) shopping center.
Residents of Rossmoor and Seal Beach who live near the center have expressed concern that building affordable housing will lower their property values. California law requires cities to designate potential sites for affordable housing—but does not allow cities to force land owners to build any affordable housing. In Orange County, “affordable housing” refers to housing that can be paid for by people earning $47,000 to $100,000 a year.
The owners of the Shops at Rossmoor have reported said they have no interest in building affordable housing.
The RCSD website encouraged opponents of the affordable housing designation for the Shops at Rossmoor to attend the meeting.
Other media incorrectly reported that the Rossmoor Homeowners Association issued the request.
