Seal Beach Marine Safety Report

The Seal Beach Marine Safety (Lifeguard) Department performed two rescues during the week of April 13 to April 19, according to Chief Joe Bailey’s report to the city manager. Lifeguards answered three medical calls, none of them major, performed two boat rescues and treated four stingray injuries.

“During Spring Break last week the Marine Safety Department staffed a tower on each side of the beach along with extra supervisors,” Bailey wrote. “Even with the less than desirable weather the spring breakers were determined to be at the beach and in the water.  The surf was consistent in the 3-4 foot range which helped to keep stingray activity to a minimum.”

Seal Beach held open lifeguard tryouts Saturday, April 14.

“The wind was blowing between 12 and 20 mph, the water was in the 50s, and the surf was 3-4 feet.  This was not a tryout for the feint of heart,” Bailey said. “From the 35 applicants that started the process, we have invited nine into our rookie academy.  The Rookie Academy consists of over 80 hours of medical and lifeguard training.”

The second session of Junior Lifeguard preparation and conditioning classes will start on April 30. The Junior Lifeguard swim test will be held in May.  For more information, visit the city of Seal Beach website at  www.sealbeachca.gov.

“We are accepting pool lifeguard applications.  Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and have an American Red Cross Lifeguard certification,” Bailey said.

The Surfrider Foundations will host Ohana Day on the beach Sunday, April 22. With the weather expected to be in the 80s, Bailey said Lifeguards were are expecting a good turnout.
