Fourth of July crowds light in Seal Beach

Seal Beach Lifeguards performed 25 rescues, one boat rescue, answered 29 medical aid calls (two of them classified as “major”) and treated 27 stingray injuries as of Thursday, July 5, according to Marine Safety (Lifeguard) Chief Joe Bailey.

“June gloom was back this week.  The Fourth of July was overcast with the marine layer the entire day.  Between the weather and the Fourth falling on a Wednesday, crowds were light for a holiday,” Bailey wrote in his report to the city manager. “We had a number of rescues in Surfside and three stingray victims on the Main beach.  This type of light activity is a rarity for the Fourth of July.”

Seal Beach Lifeguard Ryan MacDonald was one of the participants in the Saturday, June 30 Rough Water Swim. MacDonald finished the 3-mile race in just over an hour, according to Bailey.

“Tuesday July 3 was the first day of filming in Seal Beach for the television show ‘Lifeguard,’” Bailey wrote. “ The show follows lifeguards from San Diego to Seal Beach performing daily duties on the beach. ‘Lifeguard’ is in its second season and can be seen on the Weather Channel.  This is their first attempt to film in Seal Beach and any footage from our town will premier in March of next year.”
