Two men duped a woman into buying fake gold for $1,200 on Thursday, Jan. 6.
“It is unfortunate that people are victimized in this manner. Hopefully, this information will prevent someone else from being targeted,” said Los Alamitos Police Capt. Bruce McAlpine.
This is the police account of the crime:
The victim, whose name has not been released, was shopping at the Vons on Los Alamitos Boulevard when she was approached by a man who was described as Hispanic. It was Thursday, Jan. 6.
He said he was lost. He also said he needed to sell three bars of gold to pay his son’s medical bills. He said the gold bars were each worth $12,000.
According to the victim, he was 45-50 years old between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 7 inches. He weighed about 200 pounds and had a heavy build. He had hazel eyes, short brown hair, a mustache and a light complexion.
The con man told the woman the hospital would stop treating his child unless he paid $27,000 immediately.
He told the woman that he was looking for a dentist who he heard was willing to buy gold.
While they were talking, a second man joined the conversation. He, too, was described as Hispanic.
This second man was described as 55-6- years old, 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighed about 175 pounds and had a medium build.
He had brown eyes, short black hair and a mustache. He reportedly had a darker complexion than the first man.
Suspect #2, as the police call him, offered to take the gold bars to a dentist in the shopping center to verify the bars as real gold.
He left the woman and Suspect #1. When he returned, Suspect #2 said the dentist—who the woman never saw—not only confirmed the bars were genuine gold, but bought the gold for $12,000 cash.
According to the Los Alamitos Police Department, Suspect #2 produced an envelope that supposedly contained the money and gave it to Suspect #1.
Suspect #2 told the woman that he believed the gold was real, then told Suspect #1 that he would buy another gold bar for $1,700.
After the three of them talked, the woman agreed to buy the third gold bar for $1,200.
The actual sales transaction took place in her home, according to a press release issued by Capt. McAlpine. The woman then took the “gold” bar to a jewelry store. There, she was told the “gold” was actually brass—and worthless.
Suspect #1 was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, a blue-gray plaid flannel shirt and khaki pants.
Suspect #2 was seen wearing blue jeans, a white button-down sweater over a white shirt and a gold-colored Kangol hat.
