National Red Ribbon Week, the anti-drug event that focuses its energies on educating youth about the dangers of controlled substances, will be held Oct. 22-26.

At McGaugh Elementary School, Seal Beach Police Department is supplying students each with a Drug Free Bracelet and other items such as spirit sticks to be used during an opening assembly on Monday, Oct. 22.
“This should be a really great week,” said Cheryl Lemire, Mcgaugh PTA Health and Welfare Chair. “We are all so excited.”
Seal Beach Girls Scouts have volunteered to participate in Red Ribbon by making decorations and placing ribbons around the area on Friday Oct.19.
Seal Beach Boy Scouts have offered to assist with taking down the decorations after Red Ribbon Week Celebrations.
Local merchants are also involved. For example, Pavilions is donating Red Apples to be handed out as well as brown paper bags for each student to decorate with their own original drug free messages. Brown bags will be collected and returned to Pavilions with the goal of spreading the drug free message to the entire community.
The following is the Day by Day Red Ribbon Week schedule:
Monday: Opening all school Assembly with Seal Beach Police Department facilitated by Officer Phil Gonshak. Police officers will be speaking to school, giving history of national Red Ribbon Week and encouraging Drug Free living.
Students will be given opportunities to be called up to answer questions about choosing to be drug free and to be assembly helpers. Students will also have a chance to view multiple types of police vehicles, including (weather permitting) a special appearance helicopter.
Bracelets and brown bags handed out to students class by class by Seal Beach police and/or volunteers.
Tuesday: Silly Sock Day: “Let’s Stomp out Drug’s.” Students are encouraged to wear their silliest socks to signify stomping out drugs.
Students will be signing Drug Free Pledge Cards to be displayed in classrooms at their teacher’s discretion. They are working on decorating brown bags
Wednesday: Crazy Hat Day: “Put a Cap on Drug’s” Students are encouraged to wear a crazy hat.
Red appples will be handed out to kids during lunch by Seal Beach Police Officers, apples donated by Pavilion’s. Student will continue working on brown bags
Thursday: Team Jersey Day: Students are encouraged to wear a team jersey to signify healthy living and being on the “Drug Free Team.” They will collect brown bags for return to Pavilion’s.
Friday: All school wear McGaugh Red shirts, Drug Free Pledge Cards taken home to share with parents and family. Seal Beach Police Officers will be handing out Red Vine Licorice to students after lunch for a “sweet treat” to end the week.
