Sunday was another beautiful day at our Seal Beach pier. Ten uniformed sailors in their whites and Commander Paul G. Werring USN Executive Officer represented the Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach as the musical program from Los Alamitos Unified School District took place to honor them.
Our “Hometown Heroes” showed up in force as The Seal Beach Battalion of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps presented the colors..
Hank Barto played jazz on his keyboard instead of his usual instrument, the piano.
It was music from the 1940’s Jazz pieces like Cute, Undecided, a Neil Hefti song. From Oak Middle School, the wonderful girl’s choir, the Showstoppers, sang as if they were winners from “America’s Got Talent” and the Showmen dressed in their black suits and ties performed while the girls in the audience screamed as if they were listening to a Justin Bieber concert; Rachelle Randeen, director.
Los Alamitos High School Marching Band were terrific with the drum line causing a big stir while playing solo, directed by Tom Plunkett.
The music by Los Alamitos High School Jazz 1, directed by John Rush was a cool finish.
Our Seal Beach oral history programs on SBTV3’s Life and Times of Seal Beach were represented by interviewee guests Doug and Stewart Lawhead who were in attendence along with around 200 in the audience. They were on hand to tell several stories about their experiences at Anaheim Landing in the 1930’s before the navy moved in.
Concert goers enjoyed eating hot dogs and bratwurst provided by the Lions Club.
They offered a coupon to buy one, get one free from Cold Stone Creamery across the street. Commander Werring, his wife, Linda and sailors were seen partaking of this opportunity.
