The Los Alamitos High boys tennis team finished the league regular season with a 9-1 record, to take its third consecutive Sunset League title.
In the league finals tournament, the Griffins also captured several championships with sophomore Riley Smith winning the singles title. The Griffin doubles team of juniors Vatsal Bajpai and Kyle McCann also won a tournament title. LAHS also took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the JV doubles. Top honors went to the doubles team of Danny Jeong (freshman) and Andrew Wakamoto (freshman). Second place team was Clark Fordham (sophomore) and Kyle Gower (sophomore), and 3rd place was Kevin Low (freshman) and Kevin Rodriguez (freshman).
Head coach Mike Moorewood said the tournament field was one of the deepest and toughest field in recent history. Smith was named league MVP and had been honored as an All-American earlier in the year. Smith defeated two-time league John Lu of Fountain Valley for the singles title.
The doubles team of Bajpai and McCann never dropped a set en route to their tournament title. All three players advance to the CIF individual tournament. It is the third year in a row that Bajpai and McCann had qualified for CIF.
Coach Moorewood noted a contribution from the entire team for the season success. Other players are: Brian McClean, George Cooper, Brian Bales, Connor Manoogian, Karsten Stouffer, Danny Lassos, Nick Vogt, Ethan Kolsky, Naara Shin and Mikey Sanger.
